SEAL Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning

 Autumn Two

Anti-bullying Week 14th-18th November 'The Power of Good'

This term our focus is Getting on and Falling Out and Say no to Bullying.

 Spring Term our focus is Going for Goals

Summer term our focus is 'Relationships'

This theme is the second of two focusing specifically on feelings. It explores feelings within the context of our important relationships including family and friends. The theme aims to develop knowledge, understanding and skills in three key social and emotional aspects of learning: self-awareness, managing feelings and empathy.

In addition, there is a focus throughout the theme on helping children understand the feelings associated with an experience that we all need to cope with at some time.

During assembly we learned how Max coped with his feelings of loss. At the beginning of the story he did not get on with Jordan, but their relationship changed for the better.

This term our focus is 'Good to be Me'

This theme is the first of two focusing specifically on feelings. It explores feelings in the context of the child as an individual, developing self-awareness and helping the child to realise that it really is ‘Good to be me'.

The theme is about understanding our feelings as well as considering our strengths and weaknesses as learners. It aims to develop knowledge, understanding and skills in three key social and emotional aspects of learning: self-awareness, managing feelings and empathy. The theme focuses on:

  • understanding feelings, and why and how they lead us to behave the way we do – excited, proud, surprised, hopeful, disappointed, worried and anxious;
  • self-awareness – feeling good about myself, taking risks;
  • managing my feelings – relaxing, coping with anxiety;
  • standing up for myself – assertiveness, standing up for my view

I'm Ms Akhtar, PSCHE and Healthy Schools  Co-ordinator at Woodsetts/Brook Federation. I am also  the link teacher for School Council, JRSO's (Junior Road Safety Officers) and SRE (Sex and Relationships Education) throughout school. In addition, I also am involved in the organisation of events that promote and support childrens' awareness of keeping safe and healthy.

Thanks to everyone's hard work last year, Healthy School's Week was again  a tremendous success. We all loved it so much that it will be running again next year in July from 11th-15th.

We will elect our School Council on Tuesday the 29th September 2015, an amazing body of sixteen strong year 6 pupils.  This will an great opportunity for the children to experience making key decisions, working with their peers and leading important events.

School council Meetings will be held after school on Thursday's on alternate weeks. I am really impressed the councillor's energy and enthusiasm for their new roles.
