February - April

This term PE and Sport at Woodsetts Primary has been exciting;

Years 1 to 6 competed in our annual EIS Sports Day with Anston Brook Primary School. The day was fantastic, children used the professional athletic track at the English Institute of Sport. Not only did children compete in running races, they took part in a carousal of activities related to athletics. E.g. high jump, long jump, javelin, hurdles. A huge bonus of the event was a number of parents/ children getting to meet Anthony Joshua (heavy weight professional boxer).

We would like to thank all parents, teachers and children for a special event and please take a look at our amazing photos below.

Year 6 this term have been training to be sports leaders and are ready to start their lunch-time activities after half-term!

Congratulations to Woodsetts Y3/4 & Y5/6 teams finishing 2nd place in both tag-rugby competitions.

Spring Terms PE Gold Band Trip

Congratulations to those children in KS2 who took part in last term’s PE gold band visit. As a special treat these children were rewarded with a tour around the Rotherham United Football Stadium. They looked around the whole stadium and had the opportunity to see areas the public wouldn’t usually have access to. They went into the hospitality area, the players bar, the away and home changing rooms, walked down the tunnel and sat in the manager’s dug outs on the side of the pitch. The children had a fantastic afternoon.

Physical Education

FS2 – PE for FS2 will continue to take place every Thursday afternoon, again with myself and Ms Shaw. We will be focusing on play, core motor skills (balance, jumping, catching and throwing) and team games.

KS1 – PE for years 1 and 2 will take place Monday afternoons. I will continue to teach outdoor games focusing on basketball and Ms Shaw will teach multi-skills. Please make sure your child is prepared with both an indoor and outdoor PE kit.

KS2 - PE for year 3 and 4 will be held on a Tuesday afternoon and on a Wednesday afternoon for year 5 and 6. This half term will focus on outdoor games, including cricket and rounders. Also we are lucky to be able to welcome a qualified cricket coach from the Yorkshire Cricket Board to lead some cricket coaching sessions. Please make sure your child is prepared with both an indoor and outdoor PE kit.

Please make sure your child is prepared with both an indoor and outdoor PE kit consisting of..

Indoor kit - black shorts, white t-shirt and black pumps.

Outdoor kit- black shorts, white t-shirt and outdoor trainers. If the lesson is outside, we do go out in all weather so a tracksuit is also advisable.

EIS Sports Day

This year's event will bring both Woodsetts and Anston Brook schools together in competition, providing good comunity cohesion and support transition into KS3 in the coming years.

A letter will follow with all the details for the day, which will run the same as last year, with races and medal ceremony in the morning and field events in the afternoon.

Special Mentions

Recently, I took some children from years 5 and 6 to Dinnington Comprehensive School to compete in a Tag Rugby competition against other primary schools within our cluster. The children won the competition and went unbeaten throughout the whole tournament. This allowed Woodsetts Primary to progress to the Rother Valley U11 Tag Rugby festival held at Maltby Academy. The children did extremely well, again remaining unbeaten throughout the entire rugby festival and coming out as the overall Rother Valley U11 Tag Rugby champions. They have now progressed to the regional stage of the competition, date, time and venue to be confirmed.

Throughout both competitions the children produced some very impressive performances and continued to display great sportsmanship. They represented our school exceptionally well and I am very proud of them all. A special mention and a big well done to the children involved - Cameron Hill, Oliver Basnett, George Hill, Benjamin King, Thomas Lambert, Eleanor Birch, Hettie Lyons, Daisy Marwood and Maisie Toft.

Out of School Sporting Achievements

I would like to give a special mention and congratulations to Alfie Hill, Ben Rhodes, Jake Boyles, Harry Ferris and Riley Nadin from class 2 who represent Dinnington Town Junior Football Club U7s. These five boys should be very proud of themselves as they are all part of the winning team that won the Sheffield and District U7 football cup final on the 30th March.

I would also like to give a special mention to Adam Coxhill from Y6 for his fantastic sporting achievement. Adam has not only displayed outstanding sporting ability within PE but has also excelled within his cricket commitments outside of school. Adam picked up U11s Best Batsman, U11s Best Bowler and even came a very close second for Best Batsman in the U13s team.

Any parents who wish to share their child’s out of school achievements I would welcome to contact myself.

After School Sports Clubs

This term there will be two after school clubs running.

Both sessions are for KS2 and run from 3.15pm to 4.30pm. There are still places available, please see me if your child would like to attend.

Monday – KS2 boys Football.

Tuesday – KS2 girls Basketball.

And Finally..

On behalf of everyone involved with Woodsetts Primary School I would like to give a thank you to Mr Mike Bell. Mr Bell will be undertaking a half iron man distance triathlon in August and intends to raise sponsorship funds for the school. The triathlon will be a tough challenge for Mr Bell as it comprises of a 1.2 mile swim followed immediately by a 52 mile bike ride which is then followed immediately by a 13.1 mile run (half marathon).

Mr Bell was in school Monday 24th March delivering an inspiring assembly to our children that touched on the importance of good health and well-being. We thank him for encouraging our pupils to find ‘inner strength’ and to aim high.

Thank you for your continued support

Spring 2 2014

Dear Parents,

My name is Mr Steadman and I have taken over the role as the PE Co-ordinator at Woodsetts Primary School. I will be in school from 12.30pm - 4.30pm, Monday to Friday. My day will consist of running a dinner time football club, teaching Physical Education (PE) in the afternoons and running after school extra-curricular activities. I shall also be organising intra and inter school sport competitions throughout the year.

Physical Education

FS2 - FS2 will continue to have PE every Thursday afternoon, again with myself and Ms Shaw, we will be focusing on play, core motor skills (balance, jumping, catching and throwing) and team games.

KS1 - PE for years 1 and 2 will take place Monday afternoons. I will continue to teach outdoor game and Ms Shaw will be teaching indoor gym.

The lessons are taught on a rota system with year 1 and 2 both spending one hour outdoors with myself and one hour indoors with Ms Shaw. Please make sure your child is prepared with both an indoor and outdoor PE kit.

KS2 - PE for year 3 and 4 will be held on a Tuesday afternoon and on a Wednesday afternoon for year 5 and 6. This half term will focus on outdoor games, with myself teaching Basketball and Ms Shaw teaching Cross-Country. The lessons are taught on a rota system with each year group spending one hour on each of the two activities.

If severe weather conditions forbid PE to take place outdoors, then it will be held indoors and will consist of Gym and Dance.

Therefore please ensure your child has the correct PE kit for their lesson:

Indoor - black shorts, white t-shirt and black pumps.

Outdoor - black shorts, white t-shirt and outdoor trainers. It is advisable for children to also be prepared with a tracksuit.

Competitions

Spring 1

Recently, I took some children from years 3 and 4 to Dinnington Comprehensive School to play in a mat ball competition against other schools in our cluster. All the children competed to the best of their ability and enjoyed the experience. I also took some children from years 5 and 6 to Dinnington Comprehensive School to compete in an athletics competition. The children again displayed a really impressive performance and the school finished in a respectable 3rd place. Well done to all the children involved.

Spring 2

A huge congratulation to all the year 5 and 6 children that took part in the rugby festival held at Dinnington Comprehensive School. The children won the competition and went unbeaten throughout the whole tournament. The children produced some very impressive performances and displayed good sportsmanship throughout the day. They represented our school exceptionally well and I am very proud of them all. The school will now progress to the next stage of the competition, date and venue to be confirmed ASAP.

Thank you to all parents who supported us by taking their children to the venue and for also standing on the side lines cheering them on.

After School Sports Clubs

This term there will be two after school clubs.

Both sessions are for KS2 and run from 3.15pm to 4.30pm. There are still places available.

Monday – KS2 boys football.

AUTUMN 2

FS2 and KS1

PE will remain as normal for KS1, with Years 1 and 2 on a Tuesday afternoon with myself and Ms Shaw, focusing on multi-skills and gymnastics.  This will help your child to learn and develop core motor skills at an early age, aiding the tranisition into KS2 when they start to participate in more team based activites and can catch, run, jump and throw within a team/individual sporting environment etc.

FS2 will have PE every Thursday afternoon, again with myself and Ms Shaw, focusing on play, core motor skills (balance, jumping, catching and throwing) and team games.

Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 will have PE every Wednesday afternoon, this will involve a 2 weekly rota consisting of:

Hockey

Basketball

Gym

Dance

THIS WILL RUN UP UNTIL CHRISTMAS.

Therefore, please ensure your child has the correct PE kit for their lessons:

Indoor - black shorts, white tshirt and black pumps

NB - ALL CHILDREN TO WEAR PUMPS INDOOR.

Outdoor - Black shorts, White Tshirt (tracksuit may be worn if needed) and outdoor trainers.

Our cluster competitions for the half term up to Chirstmas include:

Y3/4 and Y5/6 Hockey

Y3/4 Basketball

A huge well done to all the children involved in the Y6 football tournament at Dinnington Comp, the boys won their tournament and went onto the Rotherham schools finals, where they finished 3rd.  Out of about 60+ schools in Rotherham all the boys can be VERY, VERY proud of themselves. Well done!!!

We also had 6 pupils represent the Dinnington Cluster in the Rotherham Cross-Country Finals at Herringthorpe Stadium.  Millie Hardwick, Maddie Ward and Blake Herrick from Year 4 and Ellie Birch, Lewis Nadin and Cameron Hill from Year 6 gave it their all, contributing to the Dinnington Team who won the overall cluster competition.

A huge well done to the Hockey players in years 3, 5 and 6 for their efforts in the cluster hockey tournament.  Although the compeitition is relatively early in the half term, and with minimal hockey lessons before, all the players gave a great account of themselves and can be extremely proud of their efforts!!

Many thanks for your continued support.
